Cuban Anoles

Geographical Region

Mainly found in Cuba but have now been introduced to Miami-Dade where they are now living abundantly.

Habitat

Likes to live in areas of humidity, lush vegetation where it can ambush insectivorous prey.

Colour

Depends on its location as it can blend in to plant colours, varying from dark brown to a rich green.

Size

Males can grow in excess of 15-inches

Captive Environment

36 x 24 x 24inches for an adult pair.

We are currently using orchid bark as this allows us to raise humidity levels for them. Plenty of climbing and basking areas, as well as plastic/silk plants to shy away into. A large water-bowl for them to drink from and soak in is essential. Can be kept with other lizards such as the Chinese Water Dragon, but caution should be taken, as they will try to eat lizards smaller than themselves.

Heating

These lizards like it warm, basking areas of 90°F, with a day time ambient of 84°F. night time temperatures should not be allowed to drop below 75°F. We use a 60w reflector bulb or a 50w Exo-terra Sun-glo bulb to achieve their optimum basking areas. Always use a thermometer to check basking temperatures and ensure your lizards have a cooler area to go in order to thermoregulate.

Lighting

Ultraviolet light is essential for this species, as it is needed to help metabolise calcium from its diet. Without this the lizard will develop metabolic bone disease and will die. A UV half the length of the vivarium is required to allow multiple basking areas. We currently use a Repti-glo 5.0% Branches need to be within 6 – 8 inches for the lizard to gain full effects.

Photoperiod

Autumn/winter – 11 hours light – 13 hours darkness

Spring/summer – 13 hours light – 11 hours darkness

Feeding

100% insectivorous feeding on crickets, locusts, mealworms and the occasional wax worm. Food should be dusted with a good quality vitamin supplement twice weekly

Sexing

Male –bigger of the two, the head is much larger, and he will also have a hemi-penal swelling
